Accent colors can take a room from drab to fabulous . . . but most people aren't sure how to choose or add an accent color to their home. Fortunately, it's very simple to do with pillows, rugs or curtains.
Choosing an Accent Color
Selecting the right color to set off your space can be as simple as checking the color wheel. If you want a bright, popping accent color, look no further than the complementary color on the wheel. For example, if your space is primarily blue, you can use yellow or orange as an accent color. Is your kitchen pale yellow? Add blue or purple for a fun accent.
For spaces with a more elegant look, you can select white as your accent color and in areas where white is the main color, any other color can be used!
Another option, if you have a painting or printed fabrics that you enjoy, is to select a color from those to use as an accent throughout the room.
How to Add Accent Colors
Throw pillows are the perfect way to add a splash of color to a room. They work well in bedrooms, living rooms and even dining rooms, if done well. Larger floor pillows can be used as extra seating, while smaller cushions will look nice on a sofa or window seat.
Choose curtains in your accent color or with a pattern that includes the accent color to really set off a room. This is adjustable, too, since you can pull the curtains closed for a bigger effect and pull them back for a lesser effect. Depending on the fabric used for the curtains, you can also add texture to the space.
3. Table Runners
A simple table runner can add a splash of color to your table and brighten the entire room. This easy method allows you to change accent colors anytime you want, just by switching out the table runner you're using. Keep a few different colors on hand to create new looks for different days.
4. Area Rugs
Your accent color doesn't have to be up high . . . area rugs are a great way to add a bit of color to a space and they can be used in any room. Rugs look great on wood floors, linoleum or tile and can even be used on top of other carpet. Rugs come in a variety of designs and textures to adorn your space, so select the one that suits the room best and comes in your accent color.
You may not think of blankets first when considering how to add an accent color to your space, but these are versatile and cozy additions to many spaces. Your living room will look even snugglier with a fleece blanket over the back of the couch and you can change out your accent color as needed.
Accent colors add a lot to a home and when it is this easy to add a piece of color to the space you want to enhance, why not try it?
